Robin

Priest-in-Charge of St Mary's, Cuddington

  • Robin was a scientist for 20 years before entering the Ordained Ministry of the Church. He studied Natural Sciences at Cambridge, specialising in Physical Anthropology.  Determined to use his degree as a springboard to reach exotic places, he spent some ten years travelling, doing fieldwork, research and teaching in various parts of the world, including Japan, the Caribbean, Papua New Guinea, Australia, the Faroe Islands and Cornwall in the UK. His main interest was in the origins of different human populations and their biological and genetic relationships.   This study of human diversity led him to the Natural History Museum in London, where he worked for ten years in what was then the Sub-Department of Anthropology.

  • After an enjoyable career as a scientist it came as a great surprise for Robin to feel called to train for the ministry of the Church. He spent some three years running away from the idea, but eventually gave in to the strong sense of vocation and followed the theology course at Lincoln Theological College. After Ordination, Robin served as a Curate in Keynsham Parish (situated between Bath and Bristol). Subsequently he was Rector of East and West Harptree with Hinton Blewett, in North East Somerset until 31st December 1997. In January 1998 Robin and his wife Suzy moved to Guildford after Robin had been appointed  Anglican Chaplain at the University of Surrey.  It was a return to familiar territory as he had been a Lecturer in Human Biology there in the early 1970's and Suzy had trained at the University to be a Health Visitor. Robin was installed as Priest-in-Charge of St Mary's Cuddington on 12th February 2002.

    Sue

    Sue

    Curate

Sue has had a career in the Inland Revenue since 1967 and currently works as a Policy Adviser in Somerset House, London. She was ordained in 1998 as a non-stipendiary minister, which means the time she gives to the church is unpaid. Sue combines being Curate at St. Mary's with her secular job by working 18 hours a week for us and 30 hours a week for the Inland Revenue. She is normally in the Parish on Fridays and Sundays, plus some evenings during the week. In her spare time she enjoys gardening and playing squash.

Sue has been involved at St Mary's since the late 1970's, including being a Sunday School teacher, a house group leader, and running TWYG (our youth group) for six years. On her ordination Sue was sent to be a Curate at St Andrew's Church, Oxshott, where she stayed for four years. She returned to St.Mary's in September 2002. She helps with leading Sunday services, preaching, visiting and the Emmaus course and finds this a great privilege and joy.
